(Solved) – “How do you want to open this type of file (.js)?” Windows 8/8.1

Random or regular pop up keeps popping up “How do you want to open this type of file (.js)? Keep using microsoft windows based script host” usually when malware has altered your system default script host  (Wscript.exe) settings.. (Wscript.exe is the script running engine, such as java scripts, vb scripts in a web page while  you browse that web page. By default,  java script is downloaded and executed in users pc by Wscript  , more about this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Client-side_scripting ) ..

Most of the time these kind of malware are spreaded through email attachments with bogus messages, for example  see : Javascript malware (TrojanDownloader:JS) spread via email attachments  ..

How can you fix “How do you want to open this type of file (.js) ?” error message ?

You have to follow two parts as described below..

Part 1
Run a virus/malware scanners first ,
Use adwcleaner (freeware) and and have a full system scan..http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/dl/125/ )

And
Use malwarebyte (free version) have a full system scan http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/

And
Use trojan remover and have a full system scan http://www.simplysup.com/tremover/download.html (shareware)

Part 2
open command prompt run as admin

Run below command in administrative command prompt..

Wscript.exe //H:Wscript

If it is successfully run, you should see this .. “The default script host is now set to “Wscript.exe””
